Iran’s national football team has been granted visas to enter the United States for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, ending uncertainty over the squad’s participation in matches scheduled on American soil.
U.S. officials confirmed that the necessary visas had been issued for Iranian players and essential support staff ahead of the tournament, which begins on June 11.
Iran is set to play its opening match against New Zealand in Los Angeles on June 15.
While confirming the approvals, U.S. authorities stressed that the visa process would not be exploited to allow individuals posing security concerns into the country.
The statement comes amid heightened tensions between the United States and Iran.
The Iran Football Federation has not yet publicly commented on the development.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, marks the first time a host nation will stage matches involving a country with which it is actively in conflict.
Visa-related concerns had prompted Iran to relocate its training camp from Tucson, Arizona, to Mexico in late May. Mehdi Taj said at the time that the move was influenced by difficulties in securing travel documents.

Reports earlier this week indicated that some members of Iran’s technical and administrative staff were still awaiting visas.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also stated that individuals linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps would not be permitted to join the delegation.
Some Iranian players have previously completed mandatory military service with the Revolutionary Guards, a factor that had drawn attention during the visa review process.
The visa approvals clear a major obstacle for Iran’s participation in the expanded 48-team World Cup, ensuring the team can travel to the United States in time for its opening fixtures.
