Ten years after the passing of Nigerian football legend Stephen Keshi, plans have been finalised to immortalise the former Super Eagles captain and coach on the Sports Diplomacy Wall of Fame at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs in Lagos.

The honour, backed by renowned businessman and aviation entrepreneur, Allen Onyema, is aimed at celebrating Keshi’s enduring contributions to Nigerian football, African sports development and international sports diplomacy.

The unveiling is expected to form part of activities marking the 10th anniversary of his death.

Fondly known as “The Big Boss,” Keshi remains one of Africa’s most accomplished football figures.

He captained Nigeria to victory at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations before making history again by guiding the Super Eagles to triumph at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations as head coach.

The achievement placed him among a select group of football icons to win Africa’s most prestigious football title both as a player and as a coach, cementing his place in the continent’s sporting history.

Organisers of the initiative described Keshi as a symbol of leadership, patriotism and resilience whose influence extended far beyond the football pitch.

They noted that his accomplishments helped elevate Nigeria’s standing in global sports while inspiring generations of athletes across Africa.

Beyond the trophies and accolades, Keshi earned widespread respect for his willingness to promote young talents and his unwavering confidence in the abilities of Nigerian players.

Many football observers credit him with helping reshape perceptions about the capacity of African coaches to succeed at the highest levels of international football.

Supporters of the project say the decision to immortalise him reflects the lasting impact of a man whose legacy continues to resonate a decade after his passing.

Ten years on, Stephen Keshi remains a revered figure in Nigerian and African football, with his achievements continuing to inspire players, coaches and sports administrators across the continent.
