El-Rufai to spend second night in EFCC custody over alleged fraud probe Obah Sylva Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, will spend a second night at the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in Abuja as investigations into alleged corruption during his tenure continue. El-Rufai presented himself at the EFCC office on Monday following an invitation from the anti-graft agency. He has since remained in custody while interrogators question him over allegations linked to his time in office between 2015 and 2023. A source within the commission confirmed that the former governor was still undergoing questioning as of Tuesday and would remain with investigators pending further developments. “As I speak with you, the former governor is still with our interrogators, and he will be spending the night with them,” the source said. The official added that the commission would handle the matter with diligence and professionalism, stressing that all issues raised against El-Rufai would be thoroughly examined. The source declined to state when the former governor might be released or formally charged, noting that any next step would depend on the outcome of ongoing investigations. El-Rufai’s media aide, Muyiwa Adekeye, earlier confirmed that his principal honoured the EFCC invitation and engaged with officials of the commission. According to him, the interaction between the former governor and investigators was frank and cordial. Adekeye also said members of El-Rufai’s legal team described the conduct of EFCC officials as professional. He confirmed that the former governor remained at the commission’s headquarters after the initial engagement on Monday. The EFCC investigation marks the latest development in the scrutiny surrounding El-Rufai’s eight-year administration in Kaduna State. Further updates are expected as the probe progresses.
