Corrections Policy

Last updated: 1 November 2026

The Trumpet is committed to accuracy. When we make a mistake, we correct it promptly, openly and in a way that makes clear what changed. This policy forms part of our Editorial Policy.

How to report an error

If you believe something we published is inaccurate, unfair or misleading, please contact us:

  • Email: editor@thetrumpet.ng (copy eic@thetrumpet.ng for serious complaints)
  • Phone or WhatsApp: 08060102368, 08088883311 (WhatsApp only)
  • Post: The Editor, The Trumpet, Plot 506 Oladipo Diya Street, Durumi, Abuja, FCT

Please include the link to the story, the specific statement you believe is wrong, and any evidence or documents that support the correction. You do not need to be named in the story to report an error.

What happens next

  1. We acknowledge reports of factual errors, normally within two working days.
  2. The editor responsible reviews the report, checks the original reporting and, where needed, contacts the people involved.
  3. If we find an error, we correct the story as soon as possible. Serious errors are prioritised and fixed the same day where we can.
  4. We let the person who reported the error know the outcome.

How corrections appear

  • Corrections: when we correct a factual error, we fix the text and add a dated note at the end of the article explaining what was wrong and what has been corrected, for example: “Correction, 1 November 2026: An earlier version of this story gave the wrong date for the meeting. It held on Friday, not Thursday.”
  • Serious errors: where an error goes to the heart of the story, such as a wrongly identified person or a false allegation, the correction note is placed at the top of the article and the headline is changed if necessary.
  • Clarifications: where a story is accurate but could be misunderstood, or lacked important context, we add a dated clarification note.
  • Updates: when a developing story changes because new information has become available, rather than because we made a mistake, we mark it as updated. Live trackers are updated continuously and show the latest confirmed position.
  • Minor fixes: spelling, grammar and formatting errors that do not change the meaning of a story may be corrected without a note.

Where we have shared an incorrect story on social media, we also share the correction on the same platform where practical.

Right of reply

People and organisations who are the subject of our reporting may ask to respond. Where a response adds to readers’ understanding, we add it to the story with a note saying when it was added.

Removing or unpublishing content

We do not normally remove published journalism, because the public record matters. We will consider removing or anonymising content where it is clearly inaccurate and cannot be corrected, where keeping it online puts someone at genuine risk of harm, where it is legally required, or where a story about a minor offence or a person who was not convicted no longer serves the public interest. Requests should be sent to eic@thetrumpet.ng and are decided by the Editor-in-Chief.

If you are not satisfied

If you are unhappy with our response, you may escalate your complaint to the Editor-in-Chief at eic@thetrumpet.ng, who will review it and respond in writing.
