The Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) has issued an alert over a fraudulent social media campaign targeting electricity consumers with false promises of bonus prepaid units, warning customers to remain vigilant against scammers seeking to exploit unsuspecting members of the public.

In a statement released on Monday, the company dismissed as false claims that customers could receive an additional 20 percent electricity units when purchasing prepaid tokens through unofficial channels.

According to the YEDC, the misleading message, which has been circulating on various social media platforms, did not originate from the company and forms part of a growing trend of online scams aimed at deceiving electricity consumers.

The company stressed that it does not operate any promotional scheme that offers bonus electricity units through individuals, agents, personal bank accounts, phone numbers or social media contacts.

To safeguard customers from fraud, YEDC advised consumers to purchase electricity tokens only through approved cashless payment platforms such as the YEDC Pay App, OPay, Interswitch and other authorized vending channels.

Customers requiring assistance were also encouraged to visit the nearest YEDC office for guidance.

The company further warned customers against disclosing sensitive information, including meter details and personal data, to unknown persons claiming to represent YEDC.

It also cautioned against making payments into personal bank accounts or to unauthorized agents under the guise of purchasing electricity tokens.

The warning comes amid increasing reports of cyber-enabled fraud and impersonation targeting utility customers across the country, with scammers often exploiting social media and messaging platforms to lure victims with fake discounts, promotions and investment opportunities.

YEDC urged customers to verify every promotional claim through its official communication channels before taking any action, emphasizing that information circulated through unofficial sources should not be trusted.

The company expressed appreciation to its customers for their continued cooperation and support, while reaffirming its commitment to providing reliable electricity services and protecting consumers from fraudulent activities.

It also encouraged members of the public to report suspicious messages or individuals claiming to act on behalf of the company to the nearest YEDC office or through its official customer service channels.
