The United States Mission in Nigeria has cautioned Nigerians seeking visas and passports against submitting photographs altered with artificial intelligence (AI), filters or other digital editing tools, warning that such images will not be accepted and could delay the processing of applications.
The warning, shared by the US Mission on its official X account, reiterates guidance from the US Department of State requiring all visa and passport photographs to accurately reflect an applicant’s current appearance without any form of digital enhancement.
According to the Department of State, edited or filtered photographs are unacceptable and may result in significant delays in processing applications.
The department urged applicants to consult its official guidelines for detailed photo requirements before submitting their applications.

Under the guidelines, the use of computer software, mobile editing applications, beauty filters, skin-smoothing features and AI-generated backgrounds is prohibited.
The rules are aimed at ensuring photographs remain authentic amid the growing popularity of AI-powered image editing tools.
Applicants are also required to take photographs against a plain white or off-white background, look directly at the camera without tilting their heads and remove eyeglasses before the photograph is taken.
The advisory is particularly relevant to Nigerians applying for US visas and other consular services, as the submission of digitally altered photographs could lead to application delays or outright rejection.
