Once a leading figure in the APC, he left the party and became one of the most prominent voices in the opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where he was named deputy chairman of the ADC presidential campaign council.El-Rufai was taken into custody in February 2026 and has spent months in detention while facing corruption-related charges brought by the ICPC, charges filed by the DSS, and an indictment by the Kaduna State House of Assembly.
