Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has directed Julius Berger Nigeria Plc to immediately intervene in the washed-out section of the East-West Road at Agbarho in Ughelli North Local Government Area of the state.
The State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday in Asaba, saying the intervention was aimed at easing the hardship caused by the collapse of the federal highway.
Key Highlights
- Governor Sheriff Oborevwori directed Julius Berger to repair the washed-out Agbarho section of the East-West Road.
- The road section reportedly collapsed following heavy rains and strong erosive forces.
- The damaged portion has caused difficulties for motorists, residents, businesses and other road users.
- The East-West Road is a Federal Government-owned infrastructure and a major transport corridor in the Niger Delta.
- The intervention is intended to restore smoother traffic flow and ease movement along the route.
- The Delta State Government said it would continue working with federal agencies and private-sector partners on critical infrastructure.
Oborevwori Orders Immediate Road Intervention
Aniagwu said Governor Oborevwori took the decision because of the hardship being experienced by motorists, residents, businesses and other road users following the collapse of the Agbarho section.
According to the Commissioner, although the East-West Road is owned by the Federal Government, the Governor was concerned that the sudden failure of the section had become a major inconvenience to Deltans and other Nigerians using the busy corridor.
He said the Governor consequently directed Julius Berger, which is handling major infrastructure projects in the state, to undertake remedial works on the affected portion.
Heavy Rains Trigger Road Collapse
Aniagwu attributed the damage to strong erosive forces triggered by heavy rainfall.
He said the condition of the road had created difficulties for commuters and businesses that rely on the corridor for the movement of people, goods and services.
The Commissioner urged motorists and other road users to exercise caution around the affected area while remedial works are being carried out.

East-West Road Critical to Niger Delta Economy
Aniagwu described the East-West Road as a major economic artery connecting communities and facilitating the movement of agricultural produce, goods, services and people across the Niger Delta and beyond.
He said any serious disruption along the corridor could have wider consequences for commuters, transport operators, traders and businesses that depend on the road.
He expressed confidence that the intervention would help alleviate the difficulties being experienced by road users and improve traffic movement along the affected section.
Delta Government Reaffirms Infrastructure Commitment
The Commissioner said the intervention reflected the Oborevwori administration’s commitment to keeping critical infrastructure functional, regardless of whether such infrastructure falls under state or Federal Government jurisdiction.
According to him, the administration believes governance should respond to the immediate needs of residents rather than being limited by bureaucratic boundaries.
Aniagwu added that the Delta State Government would continue to collaborate with relevant Federal Government agencies and private-sector partners to address infrastructure challenges that could undermine economic activities and residents’ wellbeing.
He said the intervention was also consistent with the administration’s broader infrastructure programme under the MORE Agenda, particularly its focus on development and improving the quality of life of Deltans.
