Key Highlights
- Reps seek urgent federal intervention over flooding in Delta State and other affected areas.
- A section of the East-West Road collapsed at Agbarho, Ughelli North LGA.
- NEMA urged to provide relief materials and emergency assistance to affected communities.
- Federal Ministry of Works asked to mobilise resources to restore the damaged highway.
- Ecological Funds Office urged to implement permanent solutions to erosion in Agbarho.
- Relevant House committees given four weeks to report on compliance.
The call followed a motion moved by Rep. Francis Waive, representing Ughelli North, Ughelli South and Udu Federal Constituency, and seconded by Rep. Mukhtar Muhammad during plenary presided over by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.
Moving the motion, titled “Need for Federal Intervention to Address the Devastating Flood in Delta State and Other Parts of the Country,” Waive said persistent heavy rainfall had submerged homes, roads, schools and businesses, displaced families and destroyed livelihoods in affected communities.
He warned that the collapse of part of the East-West Road, a major transport corridor linking Delta State with Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and other parts of the South-South, posed serious risks to motorists, commercial activities and the movement of essential goods.
The lawmaker also expressed concern over possible disruptions to education and healthcare services, alongside increased risks of road accidents and waterborne diseases arising from the flooding.
Reps Seek Emergency Relief for Flood Victims in Delta
While commending the Delta State Government for its prompt response, including Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s visit to the affected area and remedial work on the highway, Waive said the scale of the disaster required additional federal support.
The House consequently urged the Federal Ministry of Works to mobilise the resources needed to restore the damaged section of the East-West Road and improve access for motorists and other road users.
It also called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide relief materials and emergency assistance to communities affected by the floods in Ughelli North, Ughelli South and Udu local government areas.
The lawmakers further urged the Ecological Funds Office to implement lasting measures to address erosion challenges in Agbarho and reduce the risk of further damage to communities and critical infrastructure.

House Committees Given Four Weeks to Report
To ensure the implementation of its resolutions, the House mandated its Committees on Works, Emergency Preparedness and Ecological Funds to monitor compliance and report back within four weeks for further legislative action.
Speaker Abbas subsequently referred the motion to the relevant committees for further consideration.
The resolutions are aimed at securing emergency assistance for flood victims, restoring the damaged highway and addressing the underlying erosion problems threatening communities in Delta State and other parts of the country.
