Nigeria Wins 14 Medals At Uganda Para Badminton International Championship

Nigeria’s para badminton team delivered an outstanding performance at the 2026 Uganda Para Badminton International Championship, finishing with an impressive haul of 14 medals comprising nine gold and five silver medals.

  • Focus now shifts to qualifying more athletes for the Paralympic Games.

The championship, held from July 7 to 12 in Uganda, further cemented Nigeria’s reputation as one of Africa’s emerging powerhouses in para badminton.

Leading the medal charge was Lyka Brown, who won gold in the WH1 Women’s Singles before teaming up with Chukwuemeka Ijeoma Gift to clinch another gold in the WH1 & WH2 Women’s Doubles event. Chukwuemeka also emerged champion in the WH2 Women’s Singles to add another gold medal to Nigeria’s tally.

In the men’s wheelchair category, Emmanuel Ifeanacho Ohaeri captured gold in the WH2 Men’s Singles and partnered Lyka Brown to win the WH1 & WH2 Mixed Doubles title. Ohaeri also secured a silver medal alongside Ekeoma Samuel in the WH1 & WH2 Men’s Doubles.

Ekeoma Samuel added another silver medal in the WH1 Men’s Singles and teamed up with Chukwuemeka Ijeoma Gift to claim silver in the WH1 & WH2 Mixed Doubles.

Nigeria also excelled in the standing events. Obinna Precious Nwosu won gold in the SL3 Men’s Singles, while Eze Sunday Chukwuebuka finished with silver in the same category.

Nnanna Jeremiah Chigozie emerged champion in the SL4 Men’s Singles before partnering Eze Sunday Chukwuebuka to win gold in the SL3 & SU5 Men’s Doubles.

In the SU5 category, Eneojo Elijah Agada claimed gold in the men’s singles event and later combined with Obinna Precious Nwosu to earn silver in the SL3–SU5 Men’s Doubles.

Reacting to the team’s remarkable outing, President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Francis Orbih, praised the athletes for once again bringing honour to the country.

He said the performance has further strengthened Nigeria’s profile ahead of future continental and international competitions, particularly the Paralympic Games.

“The para badminton athletes have once again shown that the country can depend on them in terms of winning medals and making Nigeria proud.

“This current board will continue to support the para athletes and ensure they receive all the necessary backing. Our target is the Paralympic Games, where we hope to qualify as many athletes as possible and build on the success recorded by Eniola Bolaji,” Orbih said.

He also expressed appreciation to the Abia State Government, Bayelsa State Government and the Police College Badminton Club, Lagos, for sponsoring some of the athletes’ participation at the championship.

Orbih reaffirmed the federation’s commitment to partnering with government institutions and private organisations to further develop para badminton and sustain Nigeria’s growing success on the international stage.
