France secured a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after grinding out a hard-fought 1-0 victory over a resilient Paraguay in their Round of 16 encounter in Philadelphia.
Didier Deschamps’ side dominated possession throughout the match but struggled to break down a disciplined Paraguayan defence that frustrated the French attack for long periods.
Paraguay employed a compact defensive strategy similar to the one that helped them eliminate Germany on penalties in the previous round.
With France unable to find a breakthrough, Deschamps made a key tactical adjustment in the 61st minute, introducing Desire Doue in place of Bradley Barcola.
The substitution proved decisive as Doue injected pace and creativity into the attack. The youngster burst into the penalty area before being brought down while attempting to set up a teammate.

Although play initially continued, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) advised the referee to review the incident, leading to the award of a penalty.
France captain Kylian Mbappe calmly converted the spot-kick, sending goalkeeper Orlando Gill the wrong way to score what turned out to be the match-winning goal.
France continued to press for a second goal and Mbappe came close to extending the lead late in the game after being picked out by Michael Olise.
However, Gill produced two impressive saves to deny the striker and keep Paraguay within touching distance.
Despite the narrow scoreline, France held on comfortably to book their place in the last eight, where they will face Morocco for a place in the semi-finals as they continue their quest for a third FIFA World Cup title.
