2026 FIFA World Cup contenders Norway booked their place in the Round of 16 after edging Ivory Coast 2-1 in a dramatic knockout clash on Tuesday, with star striker Erling Haaland scoring a late winner to seal victory.

The tense Last 32 encounter at Dallas Stadium saw Norway claim their first-ever victory in a World Cup knockout match, setting up a mouth-watering Round of 16 clash against Brazil.

Norway broke the deadlock in the 39th minute through Antonio Nusa, who curled a superb effort into the top corner after being set up by captain Martin Ødegaard.

Ivory Coast responded strongly in the second half after introducing Amad Diallo from the bench. The winger leveled the score in the 74th minute with a brilliant solo effort after receiving a pass from Nicolas Pépé, giving the African side renewed hope of forcing extra time.

However, Norway had the final say. In the 86th minute, Patrick Berg delivered a low cut-back into the penalty area, allowing Haaland to tap home from close range and restore Norway’s lead.

The goal extended Haaland’s remarkable scoring streak to 13 consecutive competitive international matches and proved decisive as Norway advanced to the next round.

Ivory Coast, playing in their first-ever World Cup knockout match, battled bravely but could not find another equaliser despite late pressure.

Antonio Nusa was named Player of the Match after his outstanding display, while Haaland’s decisive strike ensured Norway’s historic progression.

Norway will now face Brazil in the Round of 16 on July 5, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.
