Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has approved an increase in the monthly salaries of cleaners at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital in Ogbomoso from ₦15,000 to ₦80,000, following an appeal by the workers during his visit to the facility.

Key Highlights

  • Governor Seyi Makinde raises LAUTECH Teaching Hospital cleaners’ monthly salaries from ₦15,000 to ₦80,000.
  • The salary increase was announced by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olanrewaju.
  • Makinde urges striking hospital workers to suspend their industrial action and return to dialogue.
  • Oyo State Commissioner for Health, Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, reaffirms the government’s commitment to resolving labour disputes in the health sector.

The governor’s Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, announced the decision in a statement on Friday, following Makinde’s meeting with stakeholders at the hospital on Thursday.

According to the statement, the salary adjustment was approved after the cleaners appealed directly to the governor during his visit to the facility.

“Governor Makinde approved an increase in the monthly salary of cleaners at the Teaching Hospital from ₦15,000 to ₦80,000, aligning their pay with the national minimum wage,” the statement said.

Makinde Appeals to Striking Hospital Workers

The salary increase comes amid an ongoing industrial dispute involving workers at the teaching hospital, with the governor appealing to striking employees to suspend their action and allow his administration to address their grievances.

Makinde stressed the importance of dialogue in resolving the dispute, urging the workers to call off the strike as a first step towards further discussions.

“Initially, I didn’t want to respond to those who are on strike. But if there are challenges, we must find ways to solve them. You put this government in place. The first step is for you to call off the strike, and once you assure me of that, we can move forward. This is our state; how we lay our bed is how we will lie on it,” he said.

The governor’s remarks underscore his administration’s position that industrial disputes should be addressed through engagement between the government and affected workers.

Oyo Health Commissioner Commends Makinde

The Oyo State Commissioner for Health, Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, commended Makinde for his support for the health sector and assured workers that the state government remained committed to resolving recurring industrial disputes.

The administration’s intervention comes as efforts continue to address workers’ concerns and restore stable operations at LAUTECH Teaching Hospital.

The outcome of further discussions between the government and the workers is expected to be important in resolving the dispute and ensuring the continued delivery of healthcare services at the facility.
