Yobe State Governor, Mai Buni, has commenced discussions with Russian investment firm, Legion Investment Moscow, on the establishment of gas-powered electricity plants to provide reliable energy for the state’s proposed agro-industrial zone.

The proposed power project is expected to address electricity challenges affecting agro-processing and other industrial activities, while supporting the state government’s efforts to attract investment into the agricultural sector.
The development was contained in a statement issued by the Director-General, Press and Media Affairs to the Governor, Mamman Mohammed, following a visit by a delegation from Legion Investment Moscow to the Government House in Damaturu on Monday.
The delegation, led by Leonid Khasiev and accompanied by the company’s technical consultant, Rasim Azimov, was in the state to assess the proposed project sites and discuss the technical and investment requirements of the planned energy solution.
According to the statement, the delegation is expected to inspect the proposed sites, engage relevant government authorities and conduct technical assessments as part of preparations for the proposed project.

Power Plant Central To Agro-Industrial Zone Plan
The planned gas-powered electricity plant is intended to provide stable power for agro-processing, manufacturing, storage, cold-chain facilities and other businesses expected to operate within the agro-industrial zone.
The energy partnership is also expected to support Yobe State’s broader plan to transform its agricultural sector from predominantly primary production to an integrated value chain involving production, aggregation, processing, storage, logistics and market access. The plan mirrors elements of the federal government’s wider Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones programme being rolled out with development-partner backing in other states.
Receiving the Russian delegation, Governor Buni expressed appreciation to Legion Investment Moscow for its interest in investing in the state.
Buni said the proposed partnership aligned with his administration’s efforts to attract international investors and technical partners capable of supporting the state’s development priorities.
He said the realisation of the agro-industrial zone would create opportunities for job creation, value addition, industrial development and increased investment in agriculture.
“Yobe State remains committed to building strategic partnerships that will unlock the economic potential of its agricultural resources and position the State as an attractive destination for agro-industrial investment,” the governor said.
The governor expressed optimism that the ongoing technical engagements would lead to constructive outcomes and contribute to the successful development of the agro-industrial zone.
