The Yobe State Rural Electrification Commission (YOREC) has proposed a ₦3 billion capital budget for 2027 to expand electricity access, strengthen power infrastructure and improve electricity supply across rural communities in the state.
Key Highlights
- ₦1.5 billion proposed for electricity network construction.
- ₦1 billion earmarked for the purchase of power-generating sets.
- ₦500 million allocated for power plants.
- YOREC plans to electrify at least one village in each local government area in 2027.
- The commission highlights completed electrification projects and power infrastructure rehabilitation in 2026.
The Executive Chairman of YOREC, Engr. Umara Mustapha Goniri, disclosed the proposed capital expenditure, explaining that the allocation would support the construction of electricity networks, the acquisition of generating sets and the development of power plants.
Goniri said the commission’s recurrent expenditure would cover salaries, overhead costs, and the fuelling and maintenance of generators and electrical networks serving hospitals.
He identified the electrification of at least one village in each local government area as a major priority for 2027. The commission also plans to provide transformers to communities where necessary and extend electricity infrastructure to underserved areas.
Other planned interventions include maintaining 33KV transmission lines and supplying generators to hospitals and other government agencies to improve electricity supply to critical public institutions.
YOREC Highlights 2026 Electrification Projects
Reviewing the commission’s 2026 budget performance, Goniri highlighted several electrification and power restoration projects carried out in communities across Yobe State.
He listed Lukunde, Lawan Kalam, Wagir, Njolowa and Kanda among the communities that benefited from the commission’s interventions, alongside other locations across the state.
According to him, YOREC also rehabilitated and strengthened major 33KV transmission lines, replaced transformers and upgraded substations to improve electricity distribution and the reliability of power supply.
The commission also carried out emergency interventions in response to community requests for transformers and electrical materials, as well as damage to electricity infrastructure caused by windstorms, vandalism and network faults.
Goniri said the interventions were necessary to restore electricity promptly, protect public infrastructure and minimise prolonged power outages affecting residents, businesses and public institutions.
