The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Yobe State Command, has recorded a 95 per cent success rate among inmates who participated in the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), with 26 of the 30 candidates passing both Mathematics and English Language.

According to a statement signed by the Commandu2019s Public Relations Officer, DSC Abdullahi Adamu, the 30 inmates who participated in the examination were drawn from custodial centres across the state.
The statement said 26 candidates passed both Mathematics and English Language, while the remaining four passed either Mathematics or English Language.
It added that all 30 candidates passed the other subjects for which they were registered.
The command also reported what it described as encouraging performances by inmates who participated in the National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations.
Education As A Path To Reform
The Controller of Corrections, Yobe State Command, CC Ortsergah J. Tever, attributed the WAEC performance to the determination of the inmates, commitment of correctional personnel and educators, as well as support from stakeholders.
Tever said incarceration should not constitute a barrier to educational advancement and personal transformation.
He noted that the command had continued to encourage inmates to participate in formal education, vocational training, digital literacy and other reformatory programmes. Candidates can verify their results directly through WAECu2019s official Nigeria portal.
The Controller commended the Controller-General of Corrections, CGC Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, for what he described as sustained commitment to strengthening reformatory and rehabilitative programmes across custodial centres in the country.
Tever also appreciated the Yobe State Government under Governor Mai Mala Buni for its support and collaboration in advancing correctional and educational programmes in the state.
He specifically acknowledged the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Associate Professor Abba Idriss Adam, for supporting educational opportunities for inmates.
Tever further commended the Officer-in-Charge of MSCC Potiskum, ACC Hafiz Adam Kuda, and the Desk Officer, Digital Literacy and NOUN Centre, DSC Abdulkadir Ukasha, for their roles in coordinating and facilitating educational activities for inmates.
A Message Of Second Chances
According to the Controller, the results were achieved through the collective efforts of inmates, correctional officers, educators, instructors, government agencies and other stakeholders.
He said the achievement demonstrated that an individualu2019s past does not have to determine their future, adding that education can provide inmates with opportunities to rebuild their lives, develop confidence and return to society better prepared to contribute meaningfully.

The command urged inmates to continue taking advantage of educational, vocational, digital literacy, entrepreneurship and other reformatory programmes available in custodial centres.
It also called for increased collaboration among government agencies, educational institutions, civil society organisations and development partners to expand access to education and skills development for inmates.
