No fewer than 136,000 members of various opposition political parties on Saturday, defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State, declaring support for President Bola Tinubu and Governor Abba Yusuf, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The defectors were received at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kofar Mata, Kano, during the inauguration of the Tinubu Support Group, which attracted APC governors, senators, members of the National Assembly and other chieftains of the party.
Among the prominent politicians who joined the APC were the former senator representing Kano Central, Rufa’i Hanga; former Kano State Governor, Kabiru Gaya; former PDP deputy governorship candidate, Yusuf Dambatta; former NDC Deputy Chairman, Aliyu Yako; and former Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Isyaku Danja.
Others include Senator Mas’ud Doguwa; former NNPP Kano State Chairman, Abdullah Abiya; former NNPP senatorial candidate, Abdulmajid Dandawaki; former Commissioner and Special Adviser, Baraka Sani; and former Ungogo Local Government Chairman, Muhammad Umar.
Speaking at the event, Governor Yusuf welcomed the defectors, describing their decision to join the APC as evidence of the party’s growing acceptance in the state.
The governor urged the new members to work with existing party members to strengthen the APC and mobilise support for Tinubu and other candidates of the party in the 2027 elections.

He also called on youths, women, support groups and other stakeholders to remain united and committed to the party’s success.
Director-General of the Tinubu Support Group, Umar Tanko-Yakasai, said the organisation would embark on aggressive grassroots mobilisation across the country to secure Tinubu’s re-election.
Yakasai commended Tinubu for his economic policies and projects, particularly those benefiting Kano, while also praising Governor Yusuf for his administration’s development initiatives in the state.
He urged the newly inaugurated national and state executives of the group to commence grassroots mobilisation immediately.
Also speaking, Sen. Hanga pledged the commitment of the defectors to work with Governor Yusuf and other APC leaders to ensure victory for the party in 2027.
The event attracted a mammoth crowd of APC supporters from across Kano State, with party leaders describing the influx of new members as a boost to the APC’s preparations for the 2027 elections.
