The Presidency has dismissed as false and misleading a viral report alleging that President Bola Tinubu is planning constitutional amendments to rename Nigeria as the “United States of Nigeria” and abolish Sharia law in the northern region.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Presidency described the report as fake news designed to create tension, spread misinformation, and destabilize the political atmosphere ahead of the forthcoming general elections.

According to the statement signed by presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, there is no plan by the president to introduce any legislation allegedly referred to as “Project True Federation” before the National Assembly.

The Presidency accused unnamed political actors of attempting to sow division in the country through fabricated reports and urged Nigerians to disregard the claims entirely.

The statement further explained that constitutional amendments in Nigeria involve a rigorous legislative process requiring broad approval from both chambers of the National Assembly and endorsement by at least 24 State Houses of Assembly.

It stressed that such constitutional matters cannot be carried out arbitrarily by the president or lawmakers without following established democratic procedures.

The Presidency added that President Tinubu remains focused on implementing economic reforms and delivering governance priorities aimed at improving the lives of Nigerians.

Citizens were also advised to remain cautious of fake and divisive information, especially as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
