President Bola Tinubu has appointed Prof. Segun Aina, a 39-year-old computer engineering academic from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, as the new registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

The move signals an early succession plan ahead of the exit of current Registrar Prof. Ishaq Oloyede.

Key Highlights:

  • President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed Prof. Segun Aina as the new Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board.
  • The appointment is part of a succession plan ahead of the exit of the current registrar in 2026.
  • Prof. Aina is a 39-year-old computer engineering expert from Obafemi Awolowo University.
  • He has experience in digital systems and has advised Nigerian examination bodies on reforms.
  • The appointment is aimed at strengthening digitisation and improving examination integrity in JAMB.

The appointment, announced Thursday by the Presidency through Bayo Onanuga, comes as Oloyede’s tenure is set to end on July 31, 2026.

Prof. Aina, who will reportedly turn 40 in July, is being positioned as one of the youngest individuals to ever occupy the sensitive education regulatory post overseeing Nigeria’s tertiary admissions examinations.

According to the Presidency, the new JAMB helmsman is not just an academic but a systems specialist with experience in digital infrastructure, examination management frameworks, and institutional reforms across federal agencies.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Kent, a Master’s in Internet Computing and Network Security, and a PhD in Digital Signal Processing from Loughborough University in the United Kingdom.

He also completed a Senior Management Programme at the Lagos Business School.

Government sources say Prof. Aina has spent over 15 years advising both federal and state institutions on digital transformation and examination system integrity, including consultancy roles with the National Examinations Council (NECO) and NABTEB.

He is also affiliated with several professional bodies, including COREN, the Nigerian Society of Engineers, IEEE, and the Institution of Engineering and Technology.

The Presidency insists the appointment is strategic, describing Prof. Aina as part of a new generation of technocratic administrators expected to deepen reforms within Nigeria’s education assessment system.

Tinubu reportedly expects him to consolidate on the reforms already introduced under Prof.Oloyede, while pushing further digitisation and integrity-driven examination processes.
