The Delta State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has concluded its House of Representatives primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections, producing a mix of returning lawmakers and new flagbearers across key federal constituencies.

Notable among the outcomes was the defeat of long-serving lawmaker, Rep. Nicholas Mutu, who has represented Bomadi/Patani Federal Constituency since 1999.

Key Highlights:

  • The All Progressives Congress held House of Representatives primaries in Delta State ahead of the 2027 elections, producing both winners and upsets.
  • Rep. Nicholas Mutu lost his Bomadi/Patani seat ticket to Basil Ganagana, while Rep. Ngozi Okolie was defeated by Ndudi Elumelu.
  • Rep. Francis Waive secured the APC ticket for Ughelli North/Ughelli South/Udu Federal Constituency for a third term.
  • Waive described his victory as a collective win and pledged unity among party members ahead of the general election.
  • Rep. Mutu lost the party’s ticket to Basil Ganagana, a former deputy speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly.

Similarly, Rep. Ngozi Okolie, the incumbent representing Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency, was unseated in the primary by Ndudi Elumelu, marking a significant political upset within the party ranks.

In Ughelli North/Ughelli South/Udu Federal Constituency, two-term lawmaker, Rep. Francis Waive secured the APC ticket for a third consecutive term, defeating former House of Representatives member, Solomon Awhinawhi in a keenly contested primary.

Reacting to Rep. Waive’s victory, the Chairman of Ughelli North Local Government Area, Jaro Egbo, commended the process, describing the outcome as a reflection of the will of party members.

In a similar vein, the Chairman of Udu Local Government Area, Vincent Oyibode, expressed confidence in Rep. Waive’s capacity to sustain effective representation at the National Assembly.

Speaking after his victory, Rep. Waive thanked party delegates for the renewed mandate and extended an olive branch to his co-contestants.

He described the outcome as a collective triumph and pledged to engage all aspirants in the interest of unity and victory in the general election.

“I see this victory as one for all of us. I will personally reach out to my brothers who contested alongside me so that we can work together to strengthen the party and deliver our constituency,” he said.

While Rep. Waive is regarded as a founding member of the APC in Delta State, both Mutu and Elumelu are relatively recent entrants into the party, a factor that observers say added an extra layer of intrigue to the primaries.

The exercise is seen as a critical step in the APC’s preparations to consolidate its presence in Delta State ahead of the 2027 polls.

As of the time of filing this report, more results are still being expected.
