Uganda’s football community has been thrown into mourning following the death of SC Villa captain and national team defender, David Owori, who died after a violent attack by suspected robbers outside his residence in Kampala.

The 27-year-old defender reportedly sustained fatal injuries on Tuesday night after confronting attackers who allegedly attempted to steal his mobile phone and other personal belongings.

According to eyewitness accounts, the assailants assaulted Owori with paving stones before robbing him and fleeing the scene, leaving him critically injured.

SC Villa spokesperson Asan Kasingye said the incident occurred near Owori’s home in Kampala’s Makindye suburb, where the footballer was ambushed and severely beaten.

He was rushed to a nearby health facility before being transferred to a private hospital in Kampala, where he succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday despite efforts to save his life.

Confirming the incident, Uganda Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala said investigators had commenced a full-scale investigation and were working to identify and apprehend those responsible.

“The scene of the incident has been documented and processed to ensure that all relevant evidence is collected and preserved,” Kawala said.

Owori’s death has triggered an outpouring of grief across Uganda’s football fraternity.

In a statement, SC Villa described the late defender as an exceptional leader whose influence extended far beyond the football pitch.

“We have lost more than a player. We have lost a leader, a brother and a friend whose commitment and character inspired everyone around him.”

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) also paid tribute, describing Owori as “a true leader on and off the pitch” whose dedication to the sport left a lasting impression on teammates and aspiring footballers.

Uganda’s senior national team, the Cranes, mourned the defender as one of the country’s committed football ambassadors, while members of Parliament observed a minute of silence in his honour and called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his killing.

Owori rejoined SC Villa in 2023 after a second stint in Spain and quickly re-established himself as one of the club’s most influential players.

He played a central role in helping the club capture its first Uganda Premier League title in two decades, guiding SC Villa to a historic 17th league championship in 2024.

His outstanding performances and leadership earned him a contract extension that was due to keep him at the club until January 2027.

Owori also represented Uganda during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign and remained a strong contender for future national team selections.

His killing has renewed concerns over violent crime in Kampala, with many Ugandans urging authorities to strengthen public security following another recent fatal attack involving a national athlete.

Police say investigations are ongoing, while football fans and the wider sporting community continue to demand justice for one of Uganda’s most respected defenders.
