President Bola Tinubu has mourned the death of veteran Nollywood actor Olu Jacobs, praising his decades-long contribution to Nigeria’s entertainment industry and his role in projecting the country’s culture to audiences around the world.
Jacobs, one of Nigeria’s celebrated actors and film executives, died at the age of 84 on Wednesday.
In a condolence message issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu described Jacobs as a major figure whose career across theatre, television and film left a lasting imprint on Nigeria’s creative industry.
The president said Jacobs’ work helped strengthen Nigeria’s cultural identity and international image, while his professionalism and dedication influenced generations of actors and filmmakers.
Tinubu recalled that Jacobs trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London and subsequently built experience in British television and international productions before returning to Nigeria.
Upon his return, he became an influential figure in the country’s growing film industry and contributed to its development through his acting and leadership.

According to the president, Jacobs distinguished himself through exceptional performances that brought depth, dignity and authenticity to his roles, earning him recognition in Nigeria and beyond.
“His passing is a great loss to Nigeria, the African film industry and the global community of lovers of the performing arts,” Tinubu said.
He added that Jacobs’ body of work would remain a source of inspiration for generations to come.
Tinubu also highlighted the contribution of Nigerian creative professionals to the nation’s cultural identity, global reputation and economic development, noting that Jacobs was among those who played a significant role in advancing that contribution.
The late actor received several industry honours during his career and was also conferred with the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).
The President expressed his condolences to Jacobs’ family, especially his wife, veteran actress Chief Joke Silva, their children and other relatives, as well as his colleagues and the wider Nigerian creative community.
Tinubu prayed for the repose of the late actor’s soul.
