Veteran Nigerian actor Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.
His wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, and their son announced his death on social media on Wednesday morning, September 16, 2026. The announcement ends years of repeated false reports about the actor’s death, which the family had previously debunked.

In a statement announcing his death, the family described Jacobs as a beloved husband, father, grandfather and uncle.
“It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought, that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle. The Lion of Lufodo,” the statement read.
The family identified the actor as Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs (MFR) and gave his dates as 11 July 1942 to 16 September 2026.
The family also appealed to bloggers and social media influencers to respect their privacy during the mourning period.
“We call on all bloggers and social media influencers to respect our family’s privacy at this time,” the statement added.

Olu Jacobs, one of Nigeria’s most respected actors, had a career spanning several decades across theatre, television and film. He became widely recognised for his performances in Nigerian and international productions and was regarded as one of the prominent figures in the development of Nollywood.
His death comes shortly after he celebrated his 84th birthday on July 11, 2026.
