Fresh political tension has emerged within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Adamawa State, following protests by supporters of the party over allegations of a plot to replace its governorship candidate, Omar Omarana.
The demonstration, held on Wednesday in Yola and other parts of the state, was triggered by claims circulating within political circles that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is allegedly backing moves to substitute Omarana as the party’s governorship flagbearer.
The allegations have generated debate among party members and supporters.
However, no evidence has been made public to substantiate the claims.
During the protest, supporters marched through major streets carrying placards and chanting solidarity songs in support of Omarana.
They maintained that he remains the party’s duly elected governorship candidate, having emerged through the ADC’s primary election.

The demonstrators called on the party’s national leadership to uphold the outcome of the primary and reject what they described as attempts by external forces to influence the party’s internal affairs.
According to the protesters, any move to substitute the candidate at this stage could undermine confidence in the party’s internal democratic processes and create unnecessary divisions ahead of the governorship election.
They urged party stakeholders to respect the will of party members as expressed during the primary election, warning that any deviation from the established process could affect the party’s unity and electoral prospects.
As of the time of filing this report, the national leadership of the African Democratic Congress had not issued any statement confirming or denying reports of any planned replacement of its Adamawa State governorship candidate.
Similarly, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar had not publicly responded to the allegations.
The situation continues to be closely monitored as party members await an official clarification from the ADC leadership.
