Rui Pinto, the Portuguese computer hacker who founded Football Leaks, has become a central figure in the controversy surrounding Manchester City’s long-running financial case after confidential documents published through the platform were linked to investigations into the Premier League club.

Pinto, 37, launched Football Leaks in 2015, saying his aim was to expose what he described as the hidden side of professional football. The platform subsequently published confidential emails, financial records and other documents involving clubs, players and agents.

Key Highlights

  • Rui Pinto founded the Football Leaks website in 2015.
  • Confidential documents published by Football Leaks included information relating to Manchester City.
  • The leaked material was later examined by journalists investigating football finances.
  • The disclosures became linked to investigations that preceded the Premier League’s 115 charges against Manchester City.
  • Manchester City have denied wrongdoing in relation to the charges.
  • Pinto has been described by critics as a criminal hacker and by supporters as a whistleblower.
  • He supplied more than three terabytes of data to Der Spiegel and other media organisations, according to reports.
  • Football Leaks disclosures also involved prominent figures including Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Neymar.
  • Pinto has faced several criminal proceedings in Portugal and France.
  • His case has raised wider questions about privacy, journalism, whistleblowing and accountability in football.

Rui Pinto Founded Football Leaks

Pinto established Football Leaks in 2015 and initially operated under the pseudonym “John.”

The website published confidential information involving some of Europe’s biggest football clubs, players and agents. Among the documents released were emails and financial records relating to sponsorship agreements and payments involving Manchester City.

Portuguese journalist Antonio Varela was among the first journalists contacted by Pinto after Football Leaks emerged.

The scale of the leaked information eventually attracted international media attention and transformed Pinto from an anonymous online figure into a major figure in football’s financial transparency debate.

Football Leaks Documents Reach Journalists

The leaked material was subsequently shared with German magazine Der Spiegel, where journalists examined millions of documents as part of investigations into the finances of professional football.

Christoph Winterbach, a data journalist involved in the project, said the documents provided journalists with unusual insight into the business and financial structures of football.

Pinto reportedly supplied more than three terabytes of information to Der Spiegel and other media organisations working through the European Investigative Collaborations network.

The disclosures went beyond Manchester City and included information concerning prominent football figures such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Neymar.

Football Leaks and Manchester City Financial Case

The Manchester City material became particularly significant because documents obtained through Football Leaks were subsequently examined as part of wider investigations into the club’s finances.

The investigations eventually preceded the Premier League’s decision to bring 115 charges against Manchester City over alleged breaches of its financial regulations.

Reports have indicated that an independent commission found Manchester City guilty of the majority of the charges. The club has denied wrongdoing and the legal process has remained subject to further proceedings.

Pinto has continued to follow developments in the case while under witness protection.

His lawyer has said the outcome of the Manchester City proceedings is significant to Pinto because it could demonstrate whether information disclosed through Football Leaks contributed to major accountability measures in professional football.

Why Rui Pinto Remains Controversial

Pinto’s role has generated sharply contrasting views.

Critics argue that he illegally obtained private information and should be held accountable for the methods he used to acquire the documents.

Supporters, however, have portrayed him as a whistleblower whose disclosures exposed financial practices and other issues within European football.

Former Portuguese politician and diplomat Ana Gomes has argued that Pinto should be protected as a whistleblower rather than prosecuted.

Journalist Varela has adopted a more nuanced position, acknowledging that the information was obtained illegally while arguing that the disclosures revealed previously hidden aspects of European football.

The competing views have made Pinto’s case part of a wider debate over the boundaries between hacking, whistleblowing and investigative journalism.

Rui Pinto Faces Legal Battles

Pinto’s activities have resulted in several legal proceedings.

He was arrested in Hungary in 2019 and extradited to Portugal, where he subsequently spent periods in prison, under house arrest and in witness protection.

In 2023, Pinto received a four-year suspended sentence after being convicted in Portugal of attempted extortion, illegal access to data and breach of correspondence.

A separate case in France later resulted in a six-month suspended prison sentence.

His legal troubles continued with another trial that began in Lisbon in January 2025.

During court proceedings, Benfica lawyer Rui Patrício described Pinto as someone who had obtained information through illegal means.

Pinto’s lawyer, Francisco Teixeira da Mota, acknowledged that his client was “not a hero and not a saint” but argued that the disclosures had produced benefits for society.

Manchester City Adviser Rejects Whistleblower Portrayal

Former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson has rejected attempts to portray Pinto as a freedom fighter.

Borson has stressed that the methods allegedly used to obtain the confidential documents were criminal, regardless of how the information was subsequently used.

The disagreement reflects the broader controversy over whether the public interest value of leaked information can be separated from the legality of the methods used to obtain it.

Football Leaks Legacy

The Football Leaks disclosures have had a lasting impact on discussions about transparency and financial accountability in European football.

The documents exposed information involving some of the sport’s biggest clubs and players while generating investigations by journalists and authorities.

Pinto’s story has also highlighted difficult questions surrounding privacy, cybersecurity, investigative journalism and whistleblower protection.

While opinions remain divided over Pinto’s methods and motives, the Football Leaks disclosures continue to be associated with major investigations into the financial affairs of professional football, including the long-running Manchester City case.
