Cristiano Ronaldo has been provisionally suspended by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) following his departure from Portugal’s national team camp during the September international break.
Key Highlights

- The suspension was issued on October 9 as disciplinary proceedings begin.
- FPF rules allow a suspension of one to six months and a possible fine.
- Ronaldo accused coach Jorge Jesus of breaking his word twice, but apologised and accepted responsibility.
- He insists he has not played his final game for Portugal.
The 41-year-old Al-Nassr forward reportedly left the squad after being an unused substitute in Portugal’s Nations League victory over Norway and subsequently learning that he would not start against Denmark in November.
The FPF confirmed that the provisional suspension was issued on October 9, describing the case as urgent as disciplinary proceedings get underway.
Under the federation’s regulations, players who fail to report for international duty or leave camp without authorisation risk a suspension of between one and six months, alongside a possible fine.
FPF President Calls For Calm
FPF president Pedro Proença, speaking to Portuguese publication Record, called for calm and said there was a strong desire to see the national team captain return.
He added that the matter would be handled through the normal disciplinary process.
Ronaldo Accuses Jesus Of Breach Of Trust
Ronaldo had earlier issued a lengthy statement explaining his decision to leave the camp, accusing Portugal coach Jorge Jesus of breaking his word twice and describing the situation as a serious breach of trust.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner also apologised to his team-mates and supporters, accepted responsibility for his actions and acknowledged that he deserved to face punishment.
However, Ronaldo dismissed speculation that he had played his final game for Portugal, insisting that he intended to continue representing his country as he pursues the milestone of 1,000 career goals.

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid forward has scored 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal, holding the men’s international records for both goals and appearances.
He helped the country win the 2016 European Championship and two UEFA Nations League titles.
Ronaldo returned to club action last week, scoring his 980th career goal in Al-Nassr’s 3-0 victory over Diriyah Club.
The dispute has generated debate in Portugal over the veteran forward’s role in the national team, particularly following criticism of his continued selection during the summer’s World Cup campaign.
Portuguese football journalist José Manuel Delgado told BBC Radio 5 Live that he believed the disagreement could make Ronaldo’s return difficult, although the FPF has indicated that the disciplinary process will proceed normally.
Despite the controversy, coach Jorge Jesus has previously said the door remains open for Ronaldo to return to the national team.
The latest development leaves the future of Portugal’s captain uncertain as the federation considers the circumstances surrounding his departure from the international camp.
