The stage is set in the central Portuguese city of Leiria as Nigeria’s Super Eagles take on European giants Portugal in a high-profile international friendly on Wednesday evening, with global stars Cristiano Ronaldo and Alex Iwobi expected to dominate attention.

Key Highlights;

  • Nigeria’s Super Eagles face Portugal in Leiria in a high-profile friendly.
  • Cristiano Ronaldo and Alex Iwobi, who will earn his 100th cap, are set to lead their respective teams.
  • Nigeria misses key attackers Osimhen and Lookman but fields players like Chukwueze, Simon, and Moffi.
  • Portugal arrives unbeaten in four matches, using the game as final World Cup preparation.
  • Kick-off is at 8:45 pm local time, with both sides expected to play strong line-ups.

The encounter at the 29,000-capacity Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa is expected to be fiercely contested despite its status as a friendly, with both teams treating the fixture as crucial preparation for upcoming international commitments.

For Portugal, coached by Roberto Martínez, the match represents their final tune-up before the FIFA World Cup finals, where they will open their Group K campaign against the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Martínez is expected to field a near full-strength squad led by veteran forward Ronaldo, alongside Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Rúben Dias, João Félix, Rafael Leão and João Neves.

Nigeria, under Franco-Malian coach Éric Sekou Chelle, arrived with confidence built on an impressive run of results since his appointment 15 months ago.

Chelle has overseen 24 matches in charge, suffering just one defeat in regulation time, a record that has strengthened belief within the Super Eagles camp ahead of the global tournament.

The Nigerian side will be without key attackers Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, but Chelle has reinforced his squad with Samuel Chukwueze, Moses Simon, Paul Onuachu, Akor Adams, Terem Moffi and promising winger Philip Otele.

Wednesday’s match will carry added emotional significance for midfielder Alex Iwobi, who is set to earn his 100th senior cap for Nigeria.

The Fulham midfielder is expected to play a central role in midfield alongside captain Wilfred Ndidi, Frank Onyeka and Raphael Onyedika.

Chelle has also confirmed defensive options including Calvin Bassey, Semi Ajayi, Bruno Onyemaechi, Zaidu Sanusi and Emmanuel Fernandez, while Abdullahi Ibrahim Bewene could feature after an impressive debut in Nigeria’s previous outing against Poland.

However, the Super Eagles camp has been hit by a setback, with centre-back Igoh Ogbu ruled out after leaving camp due to injury.

Portugal head into the fixture in strong form, unbeaten in their last four matches, including wins over the United States and Chile, and a draw against Mexico.

Their last defeat came in a shock loss to the Republic of Ireland seven months ago.

Nigeria also arrived with solid momentum, having recorded wins over Zimbabwe and Jamaica in the Unity Cup and a hard-fought draw against Poland in their most recent friendly.

Historically, Portugal have had the upper hand in the fixture, including a 4–0 win over Nigeria in a 2022 friendly in Lisbon. The Portuguese also defeated Nigeria at youth level in the 1989 FIFA U20 World Cup final.

Despite that record, Chelle is expected to approach the game with confidence, using the match as a major test of Nigeria’s tactical evolution ahead of the World Cup.

Kick-off is scheduled for 8:45pm local time (same time in Nigeria), with both teams expected to field strong line-ups in what promises to be one of the standout international friendlies of the window.
