Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has stepped down from his position as he prepares to pursue his governorship ambition in Oyo State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a resignation letter dated April 22 and addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Adelabu said his exit from office will take effect on April 30.
He explained that the decision was necessary to allow him to fully concentrate on his political campaign.
The former minister cited provisions of the amended Electoral Act 2026, which bar political office holders from contesting elections while still serving in government.
He described his resignation as both a legal requirement and a demonstration of his commitment to due process.
Adelabu expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve, noting that his tenure in the power sector provided a platform to contribute to ongoing reforms in one of Nigeria’s most critical sectors.

His resignation follows an earlier directive by President Tinubu mandating all political appointees with ambitions for the 2027 elections to step down on or before March 31.
The directive affected ministers, advisers, and heads of federal agencies intending to contest in party primaries.
With his exit, Adelabu now shifts focus from addressing Nigeria’s electricity challenges to seeking the mandate of voters in Oyo State, marking the start of a new phase in his political career.
