The Federal Government has confirmed the death of Nigeria’s Ambassador-designate to Algeria, Mohammed Mahmud Lele, who passed away in Ankara after a prolonged illness.
In a statement issued by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the diplomat died in the early hours of April 19, 2026.
Until his death, Lele served as Director in charge of the Middle East and Gulf Division at the ministry and had recently been confirmed by the Nigerian Senate as Ambassador-designate to Algeria.
Born in 1976 in Gamawa Local Government Area of Bauchi State, he studied Economics at Bayero University Kano before joining the Nigerian Foreign Service in 2001.
During his diplomatic career, he served in Nigerian missions in Berlin, Lomé, and Riyadh, where he earned recognition for his professionalism and contributions to Nigeria’s foreign policy.
The ministry described his passing as a significant loss to the Foreign Service and the nation, noting that he was widely regarded as a dedicated and exemplary officer.

The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dunoma Umar Ahmed, received his remains at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, paying tribute to his years of service.
According to the ministry, the late diplomat was laid to rest on April 22, 2026, in Kano State in accordance with Islamic rites.
The Federal Government extended condolences to his family, colleagues, and the people of Bauchi State, praying for the repose of his soul and strength for those he left behind.
