The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, is expected to resign from his position in the coming days after securing approval from President Bola Tinubu to pursue his governorship ambition.
The development was confirmed in a statement issued in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Strategic Communications, Tunji Bolaji.
According to the statement, Adelabu recently met with Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, where he presented a detailed report on his performance in the power sector over the past two and a half years.
Tinubu reportedly commended the minister for his contributions, particularly his efforts in laying what was described as a strong policy foundation for reforms in Nigeria’s electricity sector.
He was also said to have permitted Adelabu to pursue his political ambition.
Bolaji explained that the minister’s planned resignation is aimed at ensuring proper consolidation of ongoing reforms and addressing key sector challenges before his exit.
During his presentation, Adelabu highlighted achievements in stabilising electricity generation, improving transmission capacity, and implementing reforms across the power value chain.

He also showcased the National Integrated Electricity Policy (NIEP) and its Strategic Implementation Plan (SIP), which are designed to serve as a long-term framework for expanding electricity access, strengthening energy security, and advancing renewable energy integration.
The minister further acknowledged ongoing challenges in the sector, including gas supply constraints, pipeline maintenance issues, and outstanding obligations to gas suppliers, which have affected power generation.
Adelabu expressed appreciation to the president for his support and reiterated his commitment to national development, even as he prepares to exit the cabinet.
His expected resignation comes amid broader cabinet adjustments within the Federal Executive Council as the administration continues to realign its governance and policy priorities.
