Shops and goods worth millions of naira have been destroyed after a petroleum tanker overturned and caught fire near the Odukpani Local Government Area Secretariat in Cross River State.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday, October 4, 2026, has also affected vehicles and buildings in the area, with one death confirmed as of the time of filing this report.

The Cross River State Police Command, in an update on the incident, said preliminary information indicated that a tanker truck conveying petroleum products was involved in a road traffic accident and overturned.
The accident resulted in a fire that spread to nearby shops and buildings.
The driver of the tanker, who was caught in the fire, was rescued and taken to a hospital for medical attention, according to the police.
Police officers from the Odukpani Division are currently at the scene to maintain safety, secure the area and prevent further harm to members of the public.

The Fire Service has also been alerted for immediate deployment to contain and extinguish the fire, the Command’s spokesman, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said.
As of the time of filing this report, one death had been confirmed, while several shops and vehicles were reportedly affected by the fire.
The police command urged members of the public to stay away from the immediate area and allow emergency responders unhindered access to the scene.
