Ifowodo Beats Two Authors to Win Nigeria Literature Prize

Ifowodo’s winning collection competed against Unbind Me Now by James Ngwu Eze and Flora’s Love Colony by Tares Oburumu, which were also shortlisted for the 2026 Nigeria Prize for Literature.

Professor Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo, Chairman of the prize’s Advisory Board, described Why Does God Need a Gun? as a sensitive exploration of religious and political violence in Nigeria, presented through the voice of an imagined victim and a rich allegorical style.

She highlighted the collection’s three-part structure of body, mind and spirit, which examines the forces shaping contemporary realities.

Adimora-Ezeigbo also commended the technical skill, confidence and mature use of language demonstrated by the shortlisted writers.

According to her, the works explored themes including identity, belonging, nationhood, extremism, displacement and the lasting effects of conflict, reflecting Nigerian experiences with wider relevance.

Nigeria Prize for Literature Celebrates Nigerian Writing

The 2026 edition of the Nigeria Prize for Literature, sponsored by Nigeria LNG Limited, was dedicated to poetry as part of the award’s annual rotation among poetry, prose fiction, drama and children’s literature.

Now in its 22nd year, the prize recognises outstanding literary works by Nigerian writers and has become a major platform for promoting literary excellence in the country and across Africa.

Ifowodo’s victory adds to the history of the award, which has recognised writers whose works examine social, political and cultural experiences through different literary forms.

Two Filmmakers Share $20,000 Creative Arts Prize

The award ceremony also featured the presentation of the inaugural Nigeria Prize for Creative Arts.

Filmmakers Peter Oghenetega Oke, for Beyond Tarkwa Bay, and Feranmi Abiola, for Mara Mania, were named joint winners of the $20,000 prize.

Their works emerged from 98 submissions for the new award, which recognises excellence in the creative arts.

NLNG Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Adeleye Falade, said the Nigeria Prizes were established to recognise excellence that contributes to societal development.

Nobel laureate Professor Wole Soyinka, who also spoke at the ceremony, highlighted imagination as a vital link between literature, the creative arts and science.

Who Is Ogaga Ifowodo?

Born on May 14, 1966, in Oleh, Delta State, Ifowodo has built a career spanning poetry, legal practice, human rights advocacy, academic research and public commentary.

He studied law at the University of Benin and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1991. He later worked with the Civil Liberties Organisation, where he became involved in human rights advocacy during Nigeria’s military era.

In 1997, while returning from a Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Edinburgh, Scotland, he was arrested by the military regime of General Sani Abacha after advocating stronger sanctions against the dictatorship. He was detained without trial until 1998.

His activism earned him the PEN/Barbara Goldsmith Freedom to Write Award in recognition of his commitment to freedom of expression.

Ifowodo subsequently earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in poetry and a PhD in English, specialising in postcolonial literary and cultural studies, from Cornell University in the United States. He has also taught at Texas State University.

Ifowodo’s Previous Literary Achievements

Before winning the 2026 Nigeria Prize for Literature, Ifowodo had established himself as an award-winning poet.

His earlier collections include Homeland and Other Poems, which won the Association of Nigerian Authors Poetry Prize in 1993, Madiba, which received the ANA/Cadbury Poetry Prize in 2003, and The Oil Lamp, which won the ANA/Gabriel Okara Poetry Prize in 2005.

Another collection, A Good Mourning, was shortlisted for the Nigeria Prize for Literature in 2017.

Beyond poetry, Ifowodo has published scholarly work, including History, Trauma, and Healing in Postcolonial Narratives, released by Palgrave Macmillan in 2013. He also served as a federal government commissioner on the Niger Delta Development Commission board, representing Delta State, from 2016 to 2019.

His writing and public engagements have consistently examined political repression, identity, violence, freedom and the experiences of communities affected by conflict.

Poetry as a Response to Nigeria’s Challenges

Ifowodo’s victory with Why Does God Need a Gun? brings renewed attention to the role of poetry in examining religious extremism, political violence and the human cost of conflict.

His work reflects a longstanding commitment to confronting difficult social realities through literary expression, combining political awareness with a careful examination of the human condition.

The award further underscores the place of Nigerian poetry in national and international literary conversations, particularly in its treatment of faith, identity, violence and the search for justice.
