Nigeria’s weather agency, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), has issued a three-day weather forecast warning of widespread thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across several states from June 9 to June 11, 2026.
Key Highlights:
- Secure loose outdoor items because strong winds may precede thunderstorms.
- Avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain due to poor visibility and slippery roads.
- Disconnect electrical appliances during thunderstorms.
- Avoid standing under trees during severe weather.
- Monitor official weather updates for changes in conditions.
According to the agency’s latest outlook released by its Central Forecast Office, unstable atmospheric conditions are expected to trigger thunderstorms and rainfall in many parts of the country, prompting residents, motorists, airline operators, and emergency response agencies to take necessary precautions.
NiMet forecasts that northern Nigeria will experience mostly sunny conditions with patches of cloud cover during the morning hours. However, isolated thunderstorms are expected in some areas.
As the day progresses, moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is forecast for states including Kano, Jigawa, Borno, Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Adamawa, Taraba, Kebbi, Zamfara, Yobe, and Katsina.
The agency also warned residents in the North-Central region to prepare for thunderstorms and rainfall, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours.
Areas expected to be affected include the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nasarawa, Niger, Kwara, Plateau, Benue, and Kogi states.

In southern Nigeria, cloudy weather conditions are expected to dominate, with isolated morning showers likely in coastal states such as Rivers, Lagos, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River.
NiMet noted that rainfall activity will become more widespread later in the day throughout the forecast period.
By Thursday, thunderstorms and moderate rainfall are expected to intensify across Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Enugu, Bayelsa, Delta, Lagos, Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom states. Additional rainfall is also expected in Ebonyi, Imo, Abia, and Edo states.
The agency warned that strong winds could precede thunderstorms and advised residents to secure loose outdoor objects to prevent damage.
Motorists were urged to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy downpours due to reduced visibility and increased road safety risks. NiMet also recommended disconnecting electrical appliances during thunderstorms and avoiding shelter under trees, which may be vulnerable to falling branches or collapse during severe weather.
Airline operators were encouraged to obtain airport-specific weather information before flight operations to ensure passenger safety.
NiMet reiterated the importance of monitoring official weather updates as conditions may change over the coming days. The agency advised Nigerians to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures to minimize risks associated with severe weather events.
