A viral video showing the founder of Land of Praise Family Church, Pastor Emmanuel Ugochukwu, appearing to ask members of his congregation to transfer all the money in their bank accounts to him has triggered widespread reactions on social media, with Nigerians divided over whether the clip reflects a genuine appeal for money or was taken out of context.
The video, reportedly recorded at the church’s Holy Ghost Arena in Nkpor, Anambra State, shows the cleric addressing worshippers and appearing to instruct them to transfer all the funds in their bank accounts, while suggesting that something extraordinary would happen in their lives within seven days.
The short clip quickly gained traction on X, where many users questioned its authenticity and criticised what they believed was an attempt to exploit church members financially.
One user, @ifeisme01, asked, “Is this real? Abi na content?” while another, @ChuksEric, who shared the video, similarly questioned whether the footage was genuine or staged.
Some commenters interpreted the pastor’s remarks literally.
Reacting to the clip, @VictoryMartin19 wrote, “This man needs to be arrested, he is a thief and not a pastor.”
Another user, @Arikehuyo, described the incident as “broad daylight robbery,” while joking that some pastors should consider getting regular jobs.
Others mocked what they perceived as a promise of miracles in exchange for money. One commenter likened the situation to the defunct MMM investment scheme, while another sarcastically described the alleged promise as a “limited-time promo code,” adding that “even miracles are sounding like flash sales.”
However, as debate intensified, some users argued that the viral clip did not present the full context of the sermon.
An X user, @teelzyliaph, said they initially reacted negatively until watching the complete video.
According to the user, Pastor Ugochukwu later laughed and asked participants to retrieve their account details, explaining that the scenario was merely an illustration during a sermon warning against religious leaders who manipulate worshippers for financial gain.
If accurate, the explanation suggests the pastor was demonstrating how some fraudulent clerics exploit vulnerable congregants rather than genuinely asking members to surrender their money.

Another user, @EbubechiVictor1, said the controversy highlighted the broader issue of religious exploitation, arguing that while genuine churches exist, some worshippers knowingly patronise questionable religious leaders.
He encouraged people to seek places of worship where, in his words, “the truth is being preached and practiced,” while criticising self-styled ministers who allegedly depend on exploiting their followers financially.
The controversy has since evolved beyond the pastor’s remarks, fuelling wider discussions about financial exploitation in religious settings, the responsibility of congregants, and the dangers of drawing conclusions from short, edited social media clips.
While many Nigerians condemned Pastor Ugochukwu after watching the viral excerpt, others maintained that the complete video provides important context that significantly changes the interpretation of his remarks.
The incident has once again underscored how rapidly edited clips can spark public outrage online, especially when they circulate without the full context of the original message.
