The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has been thrown into mourning following the death of Queen David, younger sister of the federation’s Director of Competitions, Ms. Ruth David, shortly after the official returned to Nigeria from Poland.
Ruth David was among the NFF officials who accompanied the Falconets during their campaign at the 2026 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Poland.
She returned to Nigeria on Monday night following the team’s quarter-final exit from the tournament, only to receive the heartbreaking news of her younger sister’s death.
NFF acting General Secretary, Emmanuel Ikpeme, announced the development on Tuesday, while expressing the federation’s condolences to Ruth David and her family.
“It is a sorrowful situation,” Ikpeme said, noting that David had only just returned from Poland when she was confronted with the tragic news.
He said the NFF is standing with the director of competitions and her family as they come to terms with the loss, praying for God to give them the strength to bear the bereavement and grant the deceased eternal rest.
Earlier on Monday evening, Ikpeme had been at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, to receive the Falconets following their return from Poland.
The Nigerian U20 women’s team bowed out of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup at the quarter-final stage after Colombia scored a stoppage-time winner to secure victory in their last-eight encounter in Łódź on Sunday.
Ikpeme was accompanied at the airport by other members of the NFF management, including Director of Legal Services, Okey Obi, Technical Director, Coach Augustine Eguavoen, Director of Protocol, Barnabas Joro, acting Director of Member Associations, Ali Muhammad; and Deputy Director of Audit, Margaret Magai.
The federation commended the Falconets for their efforts at the tournament and also expressed solidarity with Ruth David and her family as they mourn their loss.
