Nigerians have reacted with mixed emotions following the reported arrest of Adewale Arojah, identified as the son of a prophet, by the Ogun State Police Command over an alleged Facebook impersonation scam involving more than ₦18 million.

Key Highlights

  • Ogun State Police reportedly arrested Adewale Arojah over an alleged Facebook impersonation scam.
  • Arojah is identified as the son of a prophet.
  • He was allegedly impersonating a renowned cleric on Facebook.
  • Police reportedly linked the alleged scam to more than ₦18 million.
  • Victims were allegedly approached for money under the guise of prayers and spiritual assistance.
  • Nigerians have expressed mixed reactions to the reported arrest on social media.

Prophet’s Son Arrested Over Alleged Facebook Scam

According to reports, Arojah allegedly created or operated a Facebook account impersonating a renowned cleric and used the account to solicit money from members of the public.

The money was allegedly collected from multiple victims under the guise of providing prayers and spiritual assistance.

The reported arrest has generated widespread discussion on social media, with Nigerians debating the alleged exploitation of religious trust and the growing use of social media platforms to defraud unsuspecting victims.

Nigerians React to Alleged ₦18m Religious Scam

Some social media users condemned the alleged use of a respected cleric’s identity to obtain money from people seeking spiritual assistance.

One X user, @JoshMane198494, described the alleged scheme as an abuse of religious trust, contrasting the work of the cleric’s ministry with the alleged actions of the suspect.

Another user, @KABAL, questioned whether similar scrutiny is applied to established religious figures and institutions.

The user’s claim that religious figures are protected by political connections was an opinion and was not independently established.

Nigerians Question Online Spiritual Payments

Other reactions focused on why people would send money to individuals offering prayers or spiritual services through social media.

An X user, @WilliamsEmekaUkachi, questioned why people would pay for online spiritual services instead of praying themselves.

Similarly, @oliverstacy questioned the practice of paying prophets for prayers and spiritual assistance online.

The reactions reflect broader public concerns about online religious services and the risks of transferring money to unverified social media accounts.

Social Media Users Warn Against Impersonation Scams

Another user, @Ishaku_Audu, urged members of the public to verify social media accounts before sending money for prayers or other services.

The user described impersonating a respected cleric to allegedly defraud people as concerning and stressed the importance of verification.

@DommaYusuf5 also warned that impersonation scams can become particularly effective when they exploit people’s faith and sense of urgency.

The user urged the public to verify accounts before making payments while stressing that allegations should be subjected to proper investigation and due process.

Religious Trust and Online Fraud

The reported case has shifted attention beyond the alleged arrest to the wider problem of Facebook impersonation scams, particularly schemes that allegedly exploit religious beliefs and the identities of trusted personalities.

Fraudsters can use fake profiles, copied photographs and the names of well-known individuals to establish credibility and persuade unsuspecting members of the public to send money.

The development highlights the importance of verifying the authenticity of social media accounts before transferring funds, particularly when requests are made in the name of religious leaders or other public figures.

Allegations Against Arojah Remain Unproven

The Ogun State Police Command’s reported arrest of Arojah does not, by itself, establish guilt.

The allegations remain subject to police investigation and any subsequent legal proceedings. The suspect is entitled to due process, and any final determination of guilt would be a matter for the appropriate court.

Members of the public are also advised to exercise caution when dealing with unsolicited requests for money from social media accounts claiming to represent religious leaders or other trusted personalities.
