Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has backed the decision of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the south, saying the arrangement aligns with the party’s power-sharing formula and principles of fairness.

Kwankwaso spoke on Saturday during the party’s national convention held in Abuja, where party stakeholders gathered amid ongoing coalition talks ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“I support the decision to zone the presidential ticket to the south, so that the region can complete its eight years,” Kwankwaso told delegates.

“This is in line with the zoning process and party agreement.”

He also urged supporters and party loyalists to intensify mobilisation efforts ahead of the next election cycle. “Please register now,” he added.

The endorsement came shortly after the NDC formally adopted a resolution zoning its 2027 presidential ticket to the south for a single four-year term.

The motion was moved by the lawmaker representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency in Anambra State, Afam Victor Ogene, and was subsequently adopted during the convention.

Announcing the decision, the party’s National Chairman, Moses Cleopas, said the arrangement was designed to balance regional interests within the emerging opposition coalition.

According to him, the presidency would return to the north, after the completion of the south’s tenure in 2031. “It will be the turn of the North in 2031,” Cleopas stated.

The party’s National Executive Committee also ratified the election of members of its National Working Committee during the convention.

The development is expected to strengthen the chances of former Anambra State, Governor, Peter Obi, and other southern aspirants seeking the party’s presidential ticket.

Meanwhile, Obi and Kwankwaso formally joined the NDC during the Abuja gathering, alongside former Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson.

Speaking at the event, Obi said the decision to align with the party was driven by the need for a stable political platform free from internal crises.
