The Nigerian Democratic Congress has distanced itself from a viral social media account falsely claiming the party is lobbying prominent political figures ahead of the 2027 elections, warning Nigerians against misinformation.

In a statement issued late Sunday and signed by its National Secretary, Barrister Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, the party described the reports as false and misleading, blaming a rogue account on X for impersonating its identity. The account had circulated claims suggesting the party was making moves to recruit former presidential candidates Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso for the 2027 race.

The NDC said the account closely mimics its official branding, including logo and colours, but does not represent its views or policies. It stressed that it has no agreement or arrangement with any individual or political bloc regarding electoral participation.

According to the statement, the party had earlier raised concerns about the fake handle and reiterated that any content from the account should be disregarded. It urged journalists and the public to verify all information through its verified communication channels to avoid spreading unconfirmed claims.

The clarification comes amid rising political activity ahead of the 2027 general elections, with speculation growing over possible alliances and platform shifts among key opposition figures. The NDC, however, maintained that it remains open to all Nigerians without bias, insisting that its platform is accessible to anyone willing to participate in the democratic process.

Reaffirming its position, the party invited citizens across the country, including women and persons with disabilities, to join and contest elections under its banner. It described itself as an emerging ideological platform committed to strengthening multi-party democracy and national development.

The development highlights the growing role of social media in shaping political narratives, as well as the risks posed by impersonation and misinformation in an increasingly charged electoral environment.
