Japanese baseball legend Isao Harimoto, who survived the 1945 atomic bombing of Hiroshima before becoming the most prolific hitter in Japanese professional baseball history, has died in Tokyo at the age of 86.

Harimoto, widely known as the “Hit Machine,” recorded a record 3,085 hits during his 23-season career, becoming the first and only player in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) history to surpass the 3,000-hit mark.

He also finished his career with 504 home runs and 319 stolen bases, making him the only NPB player to reach at least 500 home runs and 300 stolen bases.

Only three players in Major League Baseball history Barry Bonds, Willie Mays and Alex Rodriguez have achieved the same combination of milestones.

Harimoto was an 18-time All-Star and played a key role in helping the Toei Flyers win their first Japan Series championship in 1962. He was inducted into the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame in 1990.

The Golden Players Club, one of Japan’s baseball halls of fame, paid tribute to the late star, expressing deep respect and gratitude for his contribution to the sport.

Beyond his remarkable sporting achievements, Harimoto’s life was marked by extraordinary survival and adversity.

Born in Hiroshima in 1940 to Korean parents who had migrated to Japan during its colonial rule of Korea, Harimoto’s birth name was Jang Hun.

Although he spent his life in Japan and adopted a Japanese name, he only obtained Japanese citizenship later in life.

As a young child, Harimoto suffered severe burns to his right hand in an accident. The injuries left his thumb and forefinger with limited mobility, while three other fingers remained permanently curled.

The condition forced him to become a left-handed batter and thrower. He also used a specially designed glove that enabled him to catch the ball despite the condition of his right hand.

At just five years old, Harimoto was in Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, when the United States dropped an atomic bomb on the city during the final days of World War Two.

He survived the blast. Harimoto later recalled that his mother shielded him and his sister with her body when the bomb exploded, although another sister was killed.

Harimoto joined the Toei Flyers in 1959 and spent 16 years with the club before later playing for the Yomiuri Giants and Lotte Orions.

He won seven batting titles, including four consecutive championships between 1967 and 1970 a feat later matched by Japanese baseball icon Ichiro Suzuki.

Harimoto retired in 1981 after appearing in 2,752 games, leaving behind one of the most distinguished records in Japanese baseball.

After his playing career, he contributed to the development of baseball in South Korea, helping launch the country’s KBO League in 1982.

He subsequently became a respected baseball commentator and pundit, remaining closely associated with the sport that had defined much of his extraordinary life.

Harimoto’s legacy extends beyond his records, with his journey from childhood injury and survivor of one of history’s most devastating events to one of Japan’s greatest baseball players standing as one of the sport’s most remarkable stories.
