The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has updated the details of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) on its website and recognised the party’s modified logo following a Federal High Court judgment in Abuja.

Key Highlights:

  • INEC has recognised NDC’s modified logo following a Federal High Court judgment.
  • The court ruled that INEC’s refusal to approve the logo was unlawful.
  • The new logo features a two-finger victory sign on a blue background with “NDC” in red.
  • INEC also updated five key party leadership positions on its website by court order.
  • NDC members have been directed to use the new logo on all campaign materials.

The development followed a judgment delivered by Justice J.O. Abdulmalik on Tuesday, September 8, in a suit filed by the NDC against the electoral commission.

The suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1814/2026, challenged INEC’s refusal to recognise and upload the party’s modified logo after it was adopted by the NDC.

Following the judgment, INEC’s website now lists Senator Cleopas Zuwoghe as the party’s national chairman, with the position indicated as having been updated “by court order”.

The commission also listed Ikenna Enekwelzu as national secretary, John Odey as national treasurer, Mainasara Sani as national financial secretary and Reuben Egwuaba as national legal adviser.

The five positions were similarly marked as updated by court order.

Justice Abdulmalik had ruled that INEC’s refusal to permit the modification of the NDC’s colour and logo design was unconstitutional, illegal and an infringement on the party’s rights.

The court specifically recognised the logo adopted by the party at its first National Executive Committee meeting held on March 25, 2026.

The modified emblem is a digitally designed two-finger victory sign on a blue background, with “NDC” written in red.

The judge ordered INEC to forthwith approve the modified logo, including its symbol and colours, for use by the party for all purposes, including elections conducted by the commission.

The court further declared the logo adopted at the NEC meeting as the NDC’s proper official logo and issued a perpetual injunction restraining INEC, its officers, servants and agents from interfering with the party’s use of it.

The ruling was based on provisions of the 1999 Constitution, including Sections 7, 14, 40, 221 and 222, as well as Article 11 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights applicable in Nigeria.

The recognition brings to an end, at least administratively, the dispute between the party and INEC over which logo should be used as the NDC’s official identity.

NDC National Leader, Sen. Seriake Dickson had earlier said the party submitted its modified logo to INEC after its first NEC meeting, but that the commission initially uploaded it before removing it and reverting to the old logo.

Sen. Dickson said the party subsequently gave INEC time to resolve the matter before seeking judicial intervention. He welcomed the judgment, describing it as a victory for the party and confirmation of its position on the disputed logo.

Sen. Dickson also directed NDC candidates and members to immediately begin using the court-recognised logo on campaign materials, including banners and posters.

He acknowledged that some candidates might have already produced campaign materials bearing the previous logo but urged them to switch to the newly recognised version.

According to him, both versions retain the two-finger victory sign, but the party’s members should now adopt the logo approved under its constitution and recognised by the court.

He also urged party members to remain calm, saying the party had experienced leaders capable of managing the situation.

He described the dispute as part of what he termed “administrative machinations” against the party and said the NDC would continue to defend its position.
