Former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has declared that the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) will defeat the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State in the 2027 elections, despite what he described as intimidation and alleged attacks by political opponents.

Omo-Agege made the declaration while officially flagging off his campaign for the Delta Central Senatorial District election in Uvwie Local Government Area of the state.

Key Highlights:

  • Omo-Agege flags off his 2027 Delta Central senatorial campaign in Uvwie.
  • He alleges threats and attacks against his campaign, family and supporters.
  • The former senator says the NDC will seek to take control of Delta State in 2027.
  • He appeals to security agencies and the international community to monitor political activities in the state.
  • Omo-Agege canvasses support for Peter Obi, Chris Iyovwaye and other NDC candidates.
  • He accuses the Delta Government of failing to translate increased revenue into sufficient development.

The former lawmaker, who is contesting the Delta Central Senatorial District seat on the NDC platform, led his campaign team to wards 1, 2 and 3 in Uvwie to solicit support from residents and party supporters.

Omo-Agege Alleges Threats, Attacks

Addressing supporters, Omo-Agege alleged that Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori had sent thugs to disrupt his campaign and destroy his campaign venue.

He also alleged threats against his life, members of his family and supporters.

“Yesterday, I got a credible report from the governor threatening my life and that of my family members and supporters.

“Every venue we go, he will create and authorise violent attacks to disrupt our movement.”

Omo-Agege further alleged that the campaign venue was attacked early Thursday morning.

“As early as 5:30 am today, I don’t know if you are aware, he sent his thugs to this very location to come and scatter everything and injure our people,” he alleged.

The allegations could not be independently verified.

The former senator maintained that Delta State belongs to all its residents and that citizens have the right to campaign and vote for candidates of their choice.

He warned against political violence and appealed to the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Olatunji Disu, and the Delta State Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeyemi, to hold the governor responsible should anything happen to him, his family or supporters.

He also called on the international community to monitor political developments in Delta State ahead of the 2027 elections.

Omo-Agege Vows to Defeat APC in Delta

Omo-Agege accused the APC-led government in Delta State of resorting to alleged intimidation because, according to him, it lacked sufficient achievements to campaign on.

He vowed that the NDC would defeat the ruling party and take control of the state in 2027.

The former senator also appealed to the people of Uvwie to support his return to the Senate, promising to provide what he described as stronger representation for Delta Central.

He criticised the current representation of Delta Central in the Senate, particularly over the alleged lack of advocacy for the development of the Sapele seaport.

Omo-Agege said the Federal Government had allocated significant funds to the development of the Lagos seaport, arguing that similar attention should be given to Sapele.

Former Senator Questions Delta Government Spending

The NDC candidate also criticised the Delta State Government over its use of public funds.

He claimed that Delta State had received about N4 trillion over the past three and a half years but argued that the resources had not translated into sufficient development across the state.

Omo-Agege said more employment opportunities should have been created and expressed concern over the condition of some public schools.

He claimed that pupils in some schools across the state still sit on bare floors despite the resources available to the government.

The former senator cited his previous efforts to attract federal institutions and projects to Delta State, including the Federal Polytechnic and the Nigeria Aerospace School in Orogun.

He also recalled his role in lobbying for the establishment of a Defence Space School in the state.

“When the Defence Space School in Nigeria was to be established, one was going to Northern Nigeria and another was going to Western Nigeria but I put my foot down to fight for it,” he said.

Omo-Agege Endorses Peter Obi for President

Omo-Agege also called on supporters to back NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election.

He urged voters to support Obi, NDC governorship candidate Deacon Chris Iyovwaye and other candidates of the party.

“When Obi becomes the President, be rest assured that the interest of Urhobo people will be protected under his administration.

“So, as you vote for me as Senator, vote for Peter Obi as President.”

Among those who joined the campaign train were former Commissioner for Education, Dr Veronica Ogbuagu, Judith Enamuotor and Hon. Rotimi Ukuade, the NDC House of Assembly candidate for Uvwie, among others.
