The National President of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), Sola Adigun, has called for stronger collaboration among teachers, parents and government at all levels to improve students’ development and strengthen Nigeria’s education sector.

Adigun made the call on Thursday in Ado Ekiti, during an interactive multicast programme organised by the Ekiti State Bureau of Community Communications.

He urged teachers across the country to remain committed to their profession and strive to become impactful educators capable of making a lasting difference in the lives of their students.

The ASUSS president described teachers as guardians and mentors who work alongside parents and government to nurture students during their time in school.

He also urged parents to take greater responsibility for their children’s upbringing by providing adequate care, guidance and support beyond the classroom.

“The students, on their part, should remain focused on their education, work hard to achieve their goals and shun cultism and other social vices.

“The shared responsibility of raising children is essential to addressing challenges in the education sector,” he said.

Adigun commended the Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, for what he described as various interventions aimed at improving the state’s education sector.

He specifically praised the administration’s efforts in teachers’ welfare, infrastructure development, regular payment of salaries and students’ welfare.

The union leader also applauded the increase in funds available to workers under the state’s car and housing loan scheme, describing the initiative as an important measure towards improving teachers’ welfare.

He further highlighted the provision of buses to transport teachers and students to schools across Ekiti State, particularly following the removal of the fuel subsidy.

“The provision of buses to convey teachers and students to various schools in Ekiti State, particularly following the removal of fuel subsidy, has also provided significant relief to the workers.

“The transportation service has been provided free of charge,” Adigun said.

Despite the interventions, the ASUSS president said there was still room for further improvements in the state’s education sector.

He called for continuous training and retraining of teachers to strengthen their professional skills and improve the quality of teaching in schools.

“There is the need for continuous training and retraining of teachers to enhance their professional capacity and improve the quality of education,” he said.

Adigun also urged the state government to sustain the improved payment of leave bonuses to teachers and other workers.

“There is the need for continuity of improved payment of leave bonuses to teachers and other workers. This will complement the achievements recorded so far and ensure better welfare and working conditions for teachers in the state,” he said.

The ASUSS president maintained that sustained cooperation among teachers, parents and government remained essential to addressing challenges confronting secondary education and creating an environment where students can thrive.
