Delta Approves September 14 Resumption for 2026/2027 Academic Session

The Delta State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has approved Monday, September 14, 2026, as the resumption date for teaching and learning in public and private primary and post-primary institutions across the state for the 2026/2027 academic session.

The approved provisional school calendar, signed by the Director of Schools, Ighavbo­ta W.O., on behalf of the Honourable Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, outlines a three-term academic session running from September 2026 to July 2027.

Key Highlights

  • Schools will resume for teaching and learning on September 14, 2026.
  • The first term will run from September 14 to December 18, 2026.
  • The second term will run from January 11 to March 24, 2027.
  • The third term will run from April 19 to July 23, 2027.
  • Each of the first and third terms will have 65 school days, while the second term will have 49 school days.
  • The calendar applies to both public and private schools in Delta State.

According to the calendar, principals, head teachers and non-teaching staff are expected to resume for meetings, staff resumption week, teaching and non-teaching activities and planning from Monday, September 7 to Friday, September 11, 2026.

Boarders are scheduled to resume on Sunday, September 13, while actual teaching and learning will commence the following day.

The first term’s mid-term break is scheduled for October 26 to 30, 2026, while the second half of the term will run from November 2 to December 18. The first term examination will hold from December 14 to 18, 2026.

The first term holiday will run from December 21, 2026, to January 8, 2027, with schools scheduled to resume for the second term on January 11.

For the second term, the mid-term break will take place from February 15 to 19, 2027. The second term examination is scheduled for March 22 to 25, followed by the term holiday from March 25 to April 16, 2027.

The third term will commence on April 19, 2027. Students will have a mid-term break from May 31 to June 4, while the third term examination is scheduled for July 19 to 23, 2027.

The calendar also schedules the Cognitive/Placement Examination for Saturday, May 22, 2027. The Basic Education Certificate Examination is scheduled to run from Monday, May 31 to Friday, June 4, 2027.

The ministry said meetings of Parents Teachers Associations and School Term Achievement Review meetings by School Based Management Committees are mandatory and must be held during the mid-term breaks and on the last day of each term.

It further directed schools to observe all national public holidays declared by the Federal Government during the academic year.

Schools operating international curricula or those with genuine reasons for closing outside the approved dates are required to seek approval from the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education.

The ministry also stated that weekly club and sporting activities, including annual inter-house sports competitions, are mandatory, with their timing left to the discretion of individual schools.

It urged all public and private schools in Delta State to strictly adhere to the approved 2026/2027 academic calendar.
