Apostle Kassy Chukwu, Senior Special Assistant on Digital Media to Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has apologised to Afrobeats superstar, Davido, after his controversial remarks about the singer sparked backlash and heated reactions online.
Chukwu’s apology came after his earlier comments, which were perceived as a direct attack on Davido, triggered outrage among the singer’s fans and drew attention to the involvement of a government appointee in the dispute.
The controversy reportedly began after Davido made a statement concerning Governor Okpebholo and his administration, a comment that apparently offended Chukwu.
In response, the governor’s aide released a video criticising the singer, setting off a fierce online clash between him and Davido’s supporters.
The comments quickly gained traction, with many social media users questioning whether Chukwu was speaking in his official capacity as a government appointee or expressing a personal opinion.
Amid the mounting backlash, Chukwu returned with another video in which he sought to distance the Edo State government and Governor Okpebholo from his earlier remarks.
According to him, he did not make the controversial video as an appointee of the Edo State government, nor was it made on the instruction or permission of the governor.
Chukwu explained that he reacted in his personal capacity as someone who regards Governor Okpebholo as a father figure and was offended by Davido’s alleged comment that the governor should be ashamed of his father.
He said his reaction was driven by personal feelings rather than an official government position.
The governor’s aide subsequently apologised to Governor Okpebholo, stressing that the governor does not tolerate violence, threats or oppression, and expressing regret over whatever consequences his earlier statement may have caused.
Chukwu also apologised to the people of Edo State, making it clear that his comments represented his personal opinion and should not be interpreted as the position of Edo people.
He described Edo people as accommodating and welcoming, seemingly attempting to prevent the controversy from creating the impression that the state or its people were hostile towards Davido.
Turning directly to Davido, Chukwu pleaded with the singer to disregard his earlier remarks.

“Please disregard my earlier comment. Edo people love you and you are welcome home anytime, any day to Edo State. Feel free to come here,” he said.
He also expressed remorse over the controversy, saying he was sincerely sorry for what he had said in the days leading up to the apology.
The dramatic turnaround has sparked another wave of reactions online, with some social media users applauding Chukwu for taking responsibility, while others have questioned why the matter escalated in the first place.
For critics, the controversy raises questions about the boundaries between personal opinions and official responsibilities, particularly when government appointees make public statements involving high-profile personalities.
The incident has also fuelled debate over whether public officials should engage celebrities in social media battles, especially when their comments could potentially be interpreted as representing the government they serve.
What began as a personal reaction has therefore grown into a wider controversy involving Davido, the Edo State Government, Governor Okpebholo and questions about the conduct of political appointees online.
With Chukwu now retracting his remarks and extending an olive branch to Davido, attention has shifted to whether the singer will respond to the apology or allow the controversy to end there.
