Chelsea have reached an agreement with Aston Villa to sign England international Morgan Rogers in a club-record deal worth £117 million, making the 23-year-old the most expensive player in the Blues’ history.

The attacking midfielder is expected to sign a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with an option to extend for an additional year, after undergoing a medical on Monday, following his return from England’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.

The transfer also sets a new record for an English player, edging past the reported £116 million Manchester City paid Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson earlier this summer.

Chelsea’s investment eclipses the £107 million they paid to sign Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez in 2023, underlining the club’s determination to strengthen new manager Xabi Alonso’s squad ahead of the 2026/27 Premier League season.

Rogers arrives after an impressive spell at Aston Villa, where he scored 21 league goals in 85 appearances and played a pivotal role in the club’s Europa League triumph.

He joined Villa from Middlesbrough in February 2024 in a deal initially valued at £8 million, potentially rising to £15 million through performance-related bonuses.

The move will also provide Middlesbrough with a significant financial boost. A 20 percent sell-on clause negotiated during Rogers’ departure means the Championship club will receive at least £20.4 million, a figure believed to be one of the biggest sell-on payments in English football history.

On the international stage, Rogers has earned 22 senior caps for England, scoring once, and featured in seven matches during the recently concluded World Cup.

His arrival comes during a period of major changes at Stamford Bridge as Alonso reshapes the squad. Chelsea are also expected to offload several players, with Alejandro Garnacho reportedly among those likely to depart to create room in the attacking unit.

Rogers’ versatility could prove crucial for Chelsea. Comfortable operating as a central attacking midfielder, winger or supporting forward.

He is expected to compete for places alongside Cole Palmer, Pedro Neto, Estevao Willian, Jamie Gittens and Geovany Quenda.

The signing also reunites Rogers with close friend Cole Palmer. The pair progressed through Manchester City’s academy together and have often spoken publicly about their strong relationship.

Palmer’s famous “Cold Palmer” celebration was originally inspired by Rogers during his time at Middlesbrough, adding another intriguing subplot to their reunion in west London.

For Aston Villa, Rogers becomes the second high-profile midfield departure in the space of a week following Youri Tielemans’ move to Manchester United.

However, Unai Emery’s side have already responded by recruiting Switzerland international Johan Manzambi from Freiburg and are reportedly closing in on Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes as part of their squad rebuild.
