The Nigerian Army has confirmed that its official X account was accessed without authorisation, warning members of the public and media organisations to disregard suspicious or unverified information posted through the platform.
The army said the cybersecurity breach was detected at about 5 p.m. on Saturday, August 29, 2026.
In a statement issued by the army spokesperson, Col. Appolonia Anele, the military said immediate technical and security measures had been activated to regain full control of the account and prevent further unauthorised access.
Anele assured the public and other stakeholders that efforts were underway to fully secure the affected account and restore exclusive administrative control to the Nigerian Army.
She urged Nigerians to exercise caution while the situation is being resolved.
“In the interim, the public is advised to exercise caution and disregard any suspicious, unauthorised, misleading or unverified content emanating from the affected account, as such content does not represent the official position of the Nigerian Army,” she said.

The army spokesperson also advised media organisations and members of the public to verify information attributed to the Nigerian Army through its other official communication channels until full control of the X account is restored.
Anele reaffirmed the army’s commitment to safeguarding information integrity, maintaining operational security and ensuring responsible strategic communication.
The army, however, did not disclose the identity of those behind the unauthorised access or state whether any sensitive information was compromised during the breach.
