Against the backdrop of evolving security threats across Nigeria, the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 3 Headquarters, Yola, AIG Akinwale Kunle Adeniran, has called on officers and men of the Taraba State Police Command to embrace professionalism, discipline, intelligence-led policing and continuous capacity development as critical tools for effective law enforcement.

5 Key Points

  1. AIG Akinwale Kunle Adeniran called on Taraba police officers to uphold professionalism, discipline, intelligence-led policing, and continuous capacity building.
  2. He urged officers to strengthen intelligence gathering, visibility policing, inter-agency cooperation, and rapid response to security threats.
  3. The AIG emphasized ethical conduct, respect for human rights, accountability, and transparency while warning against corruption and misconduct.
  4. He encouraged community policing by building stronger relationships with traditional rulers, community leaders, and other stakeholders to improve crime prevention.
  5. Adeniran highlighted the need for school safety measures, public health vigilance, proper weapon handling, and regular training to improve operational effectiveness and public trust.

The charge came during the AIG’s familiarisation tour of the command on Thursday, where he addressed officers and personnel on strategies aimed at strengthening operational effectiveness and enhancing public confidence in policing.

In a lecture aligned with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, Adeniran outlined key areas requiring renewed commitment from police personnel, including community intelligence gathering, school safety, public health awareness, weapon handling, and inter-agency collaboration in addressing insecurity.

According to the senior police officer, the complexity of modern security challenges demands a highly disciplined and intelligence-driven police force capable of anticipating and responding effectively to emerging threats while safeguarding lives and property.

He urged officers to intensify intelligence gathering, improve visibility policing, strengthen collaboration with sister security agencies and respond swiftly to distress calls, emphasizing that security remains a shared responsibility between law enforcement agencies and citizens.

Public Health Security on the Agenda

Beyond conventional security concerns, the AIG also drew attention to public health threats, particularly Ebola and other communicable diseases. He noted that Taraba State’s strategic location and proximity to international borders make vigilance essential.

Adeniran advised officers to familiarize themselves with symptoms of infectious diseases, comply with established safety protocols and maintain close cooperation with relevant health authorities to prevent possible outbreaks.

A major focus of the lecture was professionalism and ethical conduct. The AIG stressed that respect for the rule of law, protection of fundamental human rights, integrity, accountability and transparency remain indispensable principles of modern policing.

He warned officers against corruption and other forms of misconduct, stating that public trust can only be sustained when law enforcement personnel conduct themselves professionally and responsibly.

“Professional conduct strengthens public confidence and enhances cooperation between the police and the communities they serve,” he noted.

Discipline and Community Partnership

Describing discipline as the foundation of effective policing, Adeniran challenged officers to maintain exemplary personal and professional standards through obedience to lawful directives, respect for the chain of command, punctuality and self-discipline.

He further highlighted community intelligence and information gathering as vital components of crime prevention and detection. According to him, building strong relationships with traditional rulers, community leaders and other stakeholders would improve the flow of credible information needed to tackle criminal activities.

The AIG encouraged officers to protect informants and fully embrace community policing strategies as a means of enhancing security outcomes across the state.

With growing concerns over attacks on educational institutions in parts of the country, Adeniran reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to the Safe School Initiative.

He directed officers to conduct regular security assessments of schools, strengthen engagement with educational authorities and establish effective emergency response measures capable of protecting students, teachers and school infrastructure.

The AIG also underscored the importance of continuous training and retraining, particularly in weapon handling and operational procedures.

He said officers must remain proficient in firearm safety, weapon maintenance, tactical operations, rules of engagement, patrol duties, checkpoint management and public order policing.
According to him, regular training enhances competence, operational readiness, accountability and professionalism, all of which are necessary for effective policing in a rapidly changing security environment.

As the familiarization tour concluded, Adeniran expressed confidence that officers of the Taraba State Police Command would continue to strengthen public trust and contribute significantly to peace, security and development in the state through dedication, teamwork and adherence to best policing practices.

The visit, as gathered by The Trumpet, forms part of ongoing efforts by the Zone 3 Police Headquarters to reinforce professionalism and improve operational efficiency across commands under its jurisdiction.
