The Super Eagles of Nigeria began their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign with a 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Friday.

Madagascar Take Early Lead
Nigeria fell behind in the 16th minute when Ehsan Kari headed Madagascar into the lead.
The goal appeared to have come from an offside position, but the referee allowed it to stand.
The Super Eagles thought they had equalised in the 34th minute when Alex Iwobi found the net. However, the goal was disallowed after Akor Adams was judged to have impeded the Madagascar goalkeeper.
Ilenikhena Scores on Super Eagles Debut
Nigeria continued to push for an equaliser and eventually restored parity in first-half stoppage time through debutant George Ilenikhena.
The young forward calmly converted after being set up by Iwobi to make it 1-1 before the interval.
Ilenikhena’s goal capped an impressive senior debut after head coach Éric Chelle handed him his first appearance for the Super Eagles.
Usor Completes Nigeria Comeback
Nigeria maintained the pressure after the restart and completed the comeback in the 65th minute through another debutant, Moses Usor.
Usor scored his first goal for Nigeria after receiving a pass from Semi Ajayi to put the Super Eagles 2-1 ahead.
Nigeria held on to secure all three points from its opening Group L fixture as Chelle’s side began its campaign to qualify for the 2027 AFCON.
Super Eagles Face Guinea-Bissau Next
The Super Eagles will next face Guinea-Bissau in their second Group L qualifier on Tuesday, September 29.
The match will provide Nigeria with another opportunity to strengthen its position in the group and build momentum in the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.
