Nigeria’s Super Eagles have dropped four places to 30th in the latest FIFA Men’s World Ranking, released on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, following a mixed international window under head coach Eric Chelle.

Key Highlights

  • Super Eagles drop from 26th to 30th in the latest FIFA ranking.
  • Nigeria falls from fourth to sixth among African teams.
  • Algeria and Côte d’Ivoire move ahead of the three-time African champions.
  • Nigeria defeated Madagascar 2-1 in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.
  • Super Eagles suffered a 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau.
  • Eric Chelle’s side fought back from two goals down to draw 3-3 with Russia.
  • Morocco remain Africa’s highest-ranked team at seventh globally.

Super Eagles Drop Four Places

The latest FIFA ranking represents a setback for Chelle’s team, which was ranked 26th in the previous update.

Nigeria’s decline follows a mixed run of results during the latest international window, with the Super Eagles recording one victory, one defeat and one draw.

The results were not enough to preserve Nigeria’s position among Africa’s top-ranked football nations.

Nigeria Slips to Sixth in Africa

The Super Eagles have also dropped from fourth to sixth position in Africa.

Algeria climbed to 28th globally to take fourth place on the continent, while Côte d’Ivoire moved into fifth at 29th in the world.

Nigeria now occupies sixth place in Africa and 30th globally.

The top 10 African teams are:

  1. Morocco – 7th globally
  2. Senegal – 18th
  3. Egypt – 25th
  4. Algeria – 28th
  5. Côte d’Ivoire – 29th
  6. Nigeria – 30th
  7. DR Congo
  8. Cameroon
  9. Mali
  10. Tunisia

Mixed Results Hurt Super Eagles

Nigeria opened the latest international window with a positive result, defeating Madagascar 2-1 in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

However, the Super Eagles suffered a major setback in their next fixture after losing 3-0 to Guinea-Bissau.

Chelle’s side then travelled to Russia for an international friendly and produced an impressive comeback, recovering from a two-goal deficit to draw 3-3 in Nizhny Novgorod on Tuesday.

Despite avoiding another defeat against Russia, the combination of results was insufficient to prevent Nigeria from losing ground in the FIFA standings.

Morocco Lead Africa in FIFA Ranking

Morocco remain Africa’s highest-ranked national team and occupy seventh position globally.

Senegal are second in Africa and 18th worldwide, while Egypt occupy third place on the continent and 25th globally.

Algeria and Côte d’Ivoire complete the African teams ranked ahead of Nigeria.

Spain Retain World Number One Position

At the global level, Spain retained the number one position in the latest FIFA ranking.

Argentina remain second, followed by France and England, while Portugal complete the global top five.

Brazil, Morocco, Belgium, the Netherlands and Mexico make up the remainder of the global top 10.

Super Eagles Target FIFA Ranking Recovery

The Super Eagles will now look to regain lost ground in the next FIFA ranking as Chelle continues preparations for Nigeria’s upcoming international assignments.

The latest results highlight the challenge facing Nigeria as the team seeks greater consistency and a return to the upper positions of both the African and global FIFA rankings.
