The Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) has urged voters to cast their ballots, defend their votes and shun electoral violence and malpractice ahead of the local government elections scheduled for Saturday.
ENSIEC Executive Chairman Prof. Christian Ngwu spoke to journalists on Friday in Enugu while supervising the distribution of sensitive and non-sensitive election materials at the commission’s headquarters.

ENSIEC Says It Is Ready for Polls
Ngwu urged voters to cast their ballots without fear or favour, saying security arrangements had been made to protect electoral officials, materials and the electorate.
He said the distribution of materials to the 17 council areas, followed by their delivery to ward area centres and polling units, had put the commission in a position to conduct a peaceful, hitch-free and transparent election.
“We have made adequate arrangements and the poll will open by 8 a.m. and close by 4 p.m. For now, we have not envisaged any delay or failure, so we are not planning for extension of time beyond 4 p.m. As a commission, we have worked hard and we sincerely believe that all will go well and the poll will be a huge success,” he said.
Voters, Stakeholders Urged to Remain Peaceful
The chairman urged stakeholders to avoid provocative statements and actions at polling centres.
“Let’s be civil and within some hours the election will be over as it starts by 8 a.m. tomorrow,” he said.
ENSIEC has scheduled elections for 17 chairmanship and 260 ward councillorship positions across the state. Seven political parties signed a peace accord ahead of the poll, pledging to support a peaceful process, according to a report on the Enugu election peace pact.
